The neck in particular needs an anatomically shaped and orthopedically structured underlay. It carries the weight of your head, so the pillow should carry its weight. Pillows that are too hard cannot adapt to your head shape and thus impair the function of the nerves and blood vessels. In addition, the air-conditioning properties play a role - the pillow should not hinder perspiration in the head and neck area when the patient is lying for a long time.

When buying the pillow, make sure that your shoulders do not lie on the pillow, only the head and neck area. This way, your shoulders can sink optimally into the mattress. For this reason, orthopedic surgeons generally advise against pillows that are too large. With a pillow of 40 x 80 cm you are usually on the safe side.

As a back support for reading or as a large sofa cuddly pillow, you can definitely use the old 80 x 80 cm format. The square shape is perfectly suitable as a second pillow!

Choose the right pillow filling
But the filling material also plays an important role in the choice of the dream pillow. Here we would like to give you a brief overview of the different filling materials.

Flake pillow / natural hair pillow
Natural hair fillings such as merino wool or a mixture of virgin sheep's wool and camel hair are stable, yet elastic enough to be pressed into shape and shaken again. In addition, this filling is ideal if you sweat easily because there is no heat build-up and the fibers allow moisture to be removed.

Neck support pillow
A neck support pillow is also called a shaped pillow and is designed to help people with tense neck muscles get a good night's sleep. To put it bluntly, the pillow is a latex block that holds the head in the middle of the body axis so that the cervical vertebrae do not bend.

In practice, however, you turn several times a night. Your head should be well supported in both the back and the side position. If you have a soft mattress, the support strength must be higher than that of a hard one. Many pillows also offer the option of removing some of the fill material to adjust the shape to your proportions.

By the way, you can only judge whether you find a neck pillow comfortable after about ten nights, since the familiarization factor of a soft cuddly pillow plays a significant role. This pillow is usually too high for belly sleepers and is therefore not recommended.

Millet and spelled pillows
A good alternative to the normal feather pillow are millet and spelled pillows. People who are particularly sensitive or susceptible to migraine generally react more positively to millet and spelled pillows. They are relatively firm, store heat very well and at the same time adapt to the body. The “trickle noise” is perceived as soothing by some people.

As a belly sleeper, you need a flat pillow, because the lateral position of the head already strains the neck muscles enough. A natural hair pillow with removable filling material is ideal, as these are "flattened" in the abdominal position and can be crumpled into a firmer position if required.

The right pillow for side sleepers
Side sleepers are in the majority - more than half of all people prefer to sleep like this. It is important for you that the shoulder-neck triangle is well filled by the pillow and that the head is held up to prevent the cervical spine from bending or stretching. A neck support pillow is well suited due to its anatomical shape, as is a stable pillow that you can cuddle together. Be careful not to choose a pillow that is too soft, as this does not give your head the necessary stability.

The right pillow for broad-shouldered people
Wide-shouldered men need a higher pillow than petite women - even heavier people need more support and cope better with higher pillows. Wide shoulders and a lot of weight can sink “too deeply” into the mattress, which of course should be avoided. As soon as the head is placed a little higher, the shoulders no longer sink in as deep. A neck support pillow is particularly suitable for this.

Finding the right pillow is often not so easy. Often you simply order one randomly on the Internet, regardless of your own sleeping habits. However, you should avoid this mistake if you want to prevent long-term neck problems. It doesn't matter whether you are a back, side or stomach sleeper, because the right pillow is essential for all types of sleep.
